Temp and contract FAQs

1. How long are temporary assignments likely to last? Temporary assignments can last anywhere from 1 day to 1 year, the average length of assignments are currently around 3 months with options to renew, or go permanent which is often available. Advise your consultant accordingly of any travel plans etc that you may have in order for them to arrange the most suitable length of assignment.

2. What can I do to enhance my Job Search? As well as making sure your CV is as good as it could be (see CV tips), it is important that you make the best impression in any interviews that you get. Professionalism, enthusiasm and a sound work ethic are common attributes of successful candidates. In addition technical knowledge, smart presentation and good communication skills are all favoured by clients. Unless told otherwise, wear a suit to all interviews to ensure you give the right impression.

3. How should I keep in contact with WH Marks Sattin? At WH Marks Sattin we like to keep in contact with our candidates as often as possible in order to find out any changes in their job status and to be able to update them in our search. As well as contacting by phone you should also consider e-mailing consultants. Tips: It will be easier to actually speak to your consultant if you contact them first or last thing in the day as they are less likely to be on the phone or visiting clients. If you haven’t heard from your consultant or their team in 3 working days give them a call as they may well have some good news for you.

4. How can I get good London accommodation? The London rented housing market is notoriously tough and it is important that you are settled whilst working in the U.K. The most popular areas for travellers tend to lie towards the South and South West with properties in Earls Court, Putney, Clapham, Fulham, Tooting, Southfields, Wimbledon and Hammersmith being snapped up quite quickly. The simple advice we would give when house hunting is: if you like the property and can afford the rent, snap it up because if you don’t someone else will! There are several websites you can go to: www.thegumtree.co.uk or www.loot.co.uk

5. Can I secure work before I arrive in the U.K? It is unlikely that we will be able to secure work for you before you arrive. In some situations we will be able to secure interviews with relevant clients but we will need all professional references before-hand and will need to conduct a phone interview. However it is a good idea to send your CV to us a week before you arrive so that we can register it on our database so that it is immediately ready for when you get here.

6. My Visa is coming to an end… how easy is it to get UK sponsorship? Gaining sponsorship for accounting work in the UK is not an easy task as there is an abundance of candidates available for permanent positions. The most common means of company sponsorship is usually achieved by candidates that have worked as a temp for some considerable time (6-12 months) and have gained unique skills to that company and industry. For advise on this matter please contact your WH Marks Sattin consultant. The highly skilled migrant Visa has proved to be a popular means of maintaining work during 2004.

7. How will I get paid once I get work through WH Marks Sattin? WH Marks Sattin run a weekly payroll which requires candidates to send in their timesheets (and invoices from limited companies) no later than the Monday after the week they worked. All payments will be in accounts by the following Friday.

8. How long will it take me to get work? Allow up to six weeks to find work (although many people will receive assignments long before this). Market conditions will obviously play a big factor on all positions. Historically the busiest times of the year are the first and last quarters (when most clients have their financial year ends). Your consultants will advise you as to how long you may have to wait before starting work, it is important to stay in touch and stay enthusiastic throughout your search though!!
