Financial Controller - Pro-Active Nutrition

The Business

ABF has recently acquired two sports nutrition businesses; High 5, a £10m turnover business based in Leicestershire; and Reflex Nutrition, an £11m turnover business based in Brighton. Currently these businesses are standalone, but we plan to integrate them under the company name Pro-Active Nutrition. Pro-Active Nutrition will be a standalone business within the UK Grocery Group.

The Position

The role will be responsible for the reporting of group results and in doing so, provide insight into the performance of the business including direct engagement with the Senior Management team including the Managing Director and Finance Director.  Given the recent acquisitions, there is an opportunity and requirement to identify and establish new controls and procedures in line with PLC requirements. As the champion of controls in the business you will set high standards and drive change.

 

Candidate Profile

  • Qualified Accountant with minimum 3 years post qualified experience
  • Ability to lead, develop and manage a team
  • Preparing and reviewing financial statements under UK GAAP and IFRS (including IAS39 and strong tax skills)
  • The ability to communicate complex finance issues in an accessible manner to the business
  • Influencing skills and capability to drive change
  • Hands on experience with Sage 1000  
  • Experience of implementing/migrating to a new accounting system
  • Experience of integrating acquisitions
  • Manufacturing sector experience, ideally Food

Primary Function of Role (the serious stuff)

  • Deliver a consistent improving quality of ProActive Nutrition periodic group results. Co-ordinate the insightful explanation of group results.  Summarise results for MD/FD before onward submission to ABF.   Deliver to internal and ABF timescales
  • Oversee the Budget and Forecast overheads, understanding key variances in Sales, Marketing and Admin overheads for the group and present these to the ProACtive Nutrition board. 
  • Key business partner with HR in tracking UK payroll and other costs against budget.
  • Assist in the management of the group’s FX risk exposure through review of forecast requirements; account for hedging transactions under IFRS.. 
  • Maintain the  balance sheet; ensuring that reconciling items are cleared in a timely manner.
  • Identify improvement opportunities in working capital and overall balance sheet.
  • Preparation of year end for UK entities, including files for ABF group reporting, statutory accounts and corporation tax computations.
  • Oversee both direct and indirect tax compliance across ABWF, including VAT submissions and Transfer Pricing. Develop systems to ensure the business satisfies Senior Accounting Officer standards in all areas of tax.
  • Work cross functionally to further develop and embed effective controls and efficient processes in the UK business, and ensure controls are consistent with ABF’s control framework. 
  • Responsible for technical accounting queries arising within ABF
  • Banking and treasury arrangements.  
  • General ledger maintenance .
  • Lead relationship with ABF Internal Audit on all aspects of controls in the business. Lead relationship with External Audit for interim and full year work .
  • Support the Finance Director in the data protection agenda
  • Support the professional development of members of the team.
  • Adhere to and be positive role model with respect of all company health, safety and environmental policies and procedures

Financial Accountant

Key areas of responsibility:

  • To provide support in financial and management reporting, internal controls, cash management, foreign currency exposure and analysis to the central finance team and wider business.

  • To provide insight and challenge to existing and future performance of the business.

  • Prepare and analyse monthly management accounts, yearly budgeting and quarterly forecasting

  • Managing and interpreting cash flows and predicting future trends.

  • Review and present current economic and currency news to aid management decision making in foreign currency cover.

  • Calculation and preparation of the company’s FX forward hedging deals.  

  • Management of a Treasury assistant. 

  • Monitor internal controls and ensure that appropriate controls are in place.

  • Liaise with internal and external auditors, resolving audit points in timely manner.

  • Ensure business is compliant with Group and other statutory requirements.


Commercial Accountant

Key areas of responsibility:

  • Finance business partner to the Sales & Marketing teams.
  • Provide support, challenge and financial insight to achieve improved commercial performance through enhanced decision making, and optimal return on investment from trade spend, category marketing spend and new product launches
  • Understand weekly/period results and challenge anomalies to ensure integrity.
  • Provide commentary by customer and by segment to the Board and Senior Management on variances to Budget, Forecast and Prior Year at the end of each period.
  • Participate in Demand Review meetings with the Sales and Planning Teams, understanding and challenging changes in forecast since the previous period.
  • Prepare analysis to support Budget and Forecast submissions to ABF Group head office.
  • Review of Category Marketing spend and challenging return on investment.
  • Business partnering the commercial teams to prepare business cases for new product development and for existing product development.
 

Financial Planning & Analysis Manager

Key areas of responsibility:

  • The core focus of this role is to lead and deliver on the planning, forecasting and budgeting processes, resulting in the development of robust financial plans for a dynamic international business with ambitious growth plans.
  • To define, monitor and report on key KPIs relating to business performance.
  • To manage and coordinate the budgeting and forecasting process, including the consolidation and coordination of submissions.
  • Completion of variance analysis and performance reporting.
  • Evaluating and interpreting discrepancies in plans for the business enabling remedial actions or adjustments to be made.
  • Produces timely and accurate financial and management information.
