We are delighted to be working in a Retained Partnership with Yorkshire Cancer Research to help appoint a new Director of Finance.

Yorkshire Cancer Research help people in and around Yorkshire avoid, survive and cope with cancer. Their vision is that every single person in every community in and around Yorkshire has the very best chance of living a long and healthy life with, without and beyond cancer.

In June 2017, Dr Kathryn Scott was appointed Chief Executive, having joined the charity in 2008 and previously held the position of Director of Research and Innovation. Dr Scott was integral to formulating the charity’s ambitious 10-year strategy launched in 2015, which aims to invest £100m across Yorkshire so by 2025 at least 2,000 more people in the region survive cancer every year.

As part of this strategy, the need has arisen to appoint a new Director of Finance who will be primarily responsible for:

  • Leading the development of effective financial planning processes to ensure that the Charity’s overall strategy will be delivered including 1, 3 and 5 year plans 
  • Take ownership of the Charity’s financial and management accounting functions effectively with particular focus on cash-flows, efficient use of donors’ funds, management of restricted funds and appropriate use of invested reserves
  • Developing and managing existing and new funding streams which deliver against the charity’s strategy
  • Developing and overseeing departmental budgets and the reporting cycle for the Board of Trustees and the Executive Leadership Team
  • Leading the Finance Team and the control and continuous improvement of all service functions including IT, health & safety, facilities and premises, service contracts including HR

The ideal candidate will ideally have the following experience & attributes:

  • Minimum of 5 years’ experience of operating at a senior strategic management level 
  • Qualified to a minimum of degree level in accountancy, finance or related subject and ideally from a Chartered Accountancy background
  • Minimum of 5 years financial management and accounting experience with particular strengths in managing cashflows, restricted funds, commercial investments and royalty streams 
  • Strong experience of leading the development of effective financial planning processes to deliver strategic business objectives
  • A successful track record of making strong financial strategic decisions
  • Ideally with experience of effectively leading and managing a finance team and working collaboratively across other functions
  • Experience of managing and continuously improving service functions such as IT, health & safety, facilities and premises and contract services
