London calling

London is one of the world’s preeminent business centres, and the opportunities it presents to accounting and finance professionals are unrivalled. While there are great career opportunities across the whole country, the sheer number and variety of roles available in the capital make it unique. Furthermore, for those looking to work in niche sectors like media or international development, it is often London or bust. 

The financial services sector is the jewel in the crown of London’s economy, and the opportunities for accounting professionals here are numerous. While global economic turbulence has had an impact on hiring volumes, regulatory changes mean there is a huge demand for professionals with compliance and reporting experience in the City. With plenty of further regulation on the horizon, this is set to grow. 

There was a real increase in demand for accounting professionals practicing in commerce & industry over the past 12 months, with Marks Sattin vacancies at their highest level since 2010. The property, real estate and technology sectors experienced particular demand for those with the right skillsets, with some hiring teams even offering the right candidate a ‘signing on’ bonus to attract the highest calibre of individual. 

Hiring volumes in the professional services market have also picked up again, following a slow first half of 2015. The Big Four have been particularly focused on increasing headcount within insurance, investment management and banking.
