As the year comes to a close, we thought we would share some market information on what we see happening within the Thames Valley region: How well have businesses been performing in the Thames Valley?There are definitely many positives to take away from the last 6 – 9 months and we have seen businesses adapt quickly and efficiently to the new world of hiring. Remote working has become the norm for many of us and it has been refreshing to hear good stories from around the area as to how teams have responded and how business operations have been working well for the majority. We are sure this is something that will continue to be the norm once we come through to a more “normal” time. Onboarding and interviewingWe have seen a dramatic change in the way these process would normal have worked, and maybe this is a step in the right direction? Through the year we have supported our clients and candidates in understanding best practices for video interviewing and virtual onboarding. For many businesses in our market they have been conducting their usual two stage processes, albeit with the necessary changes. The initial telephone interviews and two or more video interviews via Teams or Zoom, sometimes even WhatsApp video. These have all proven to be highly effective and we have seen success conducting many processes like this remotely during the course of the year. Onboarding remotely has been a positive experience for both our clients and our candidates starting new roles. We have luckily heard no horror stories which is amazing, especially considering that we were plunged into this new way of working without very much warning or time to plan these new remote processes. We are positive about these new tools we are using making attending interviews and integrating new employees easier than ever, and we're sure this was of working will carry through to the future of recruiting.The interim and temporary marketOne of the areas which we have been successful is helping business navigate their own situations by finding interim or temporary talent to meet certain demands. This has seen a boom in the desire for short term placements. It’s imperative you make an impact in the first few moments of your interview; this will dictate the rest of the meeting. It starts the moment you arrive on site Interviews usually start well before you greet your interviewer. It’s common for interviewers to ask the front of house receptionist for their first impressions and may also be watching you arrive from a nearby window. It’s important to make sure you don’t park in an unauthorised area and also never be discourteous to those you meet - being friendly and confident from the get-go is key! It’s also popular for companies to go through the trouble of checking your social media channels such as LinkedIn or Instagram. It’s beneficial to check if you have any inappropriate photographs or mismatching information on your CV compared to your LinkedIn profile. It’s important to note that arriving early will give you a great opportunity to have a pause before the interview and break the ice with the receptionist – you never know, you may learn something to discuss during your meeting. Make a lasting impression First impressions count, make sure you smile and interact in a confident manner, shake hands firmly (but not aggressively) and make good eye contact with your interviewer. Linguistic mirroring can also be something to bear in mind and can really help you build rapport with your interviewers! It’s always good to remember that they have taken the time out of their busy schedule to meet you, so ensure you demonstrate a positive attitude. Would you hire someone who lacked energy or drive? Probably not! Dress appropriately Dress code is something many people take for granted in an interview, prepare for this by speaking to your consultant who deals with the client on a regular basis and will be able to give you advice on how you should dress to suit the business. You can also view the company website to get an idea of the culture and people who work there. If you’re ever unsure, it’s always best to wear a suit or a shirt/blouse, it’s better to be overdressed than under dressed. Build rapport Avoid talking politics or anything which could really turn sour, unless you are prompted to discuss it. Inevitably you want to let your personality shine through but voicing a bad opinion could really hinder your chances of getting that dream job. So as part of your interview preparation, it’s a good idea to think ahead to some of the likely topics that might come up. Speak to your consultant or do some research online about the company and the people who you’re going to meet, you never know you may share a connection or share a passion for a certain topic. You can also prepare by researching whether the company has been in the news and have a few conversation topics ready for them around this. This will help elevate you compared to other interviewees who will likely be asking the normal questions. You want to be memorable for the right reasons! Deliver your mission statement It’s a good idea to have a few key messages that you want to make to your interviewers. ‘I’m ready for the chance to head up an Interim FP&A team,’ ‘I combine solid technical experience from my days in practice with robust commercial finance expertise in industry, in both permanent and interim management roles.’ These types of statements stick in the minds of the interviewers and hopefully leave a lasting impression. A few things to avoid on your interview day: - Arriving late - Trying to cram in last minute information - Bad mouthing past employers/colleagues - Acting in a rude or arrogant manner - Leaving your mobile phone turned on (rather leave your mobile phone in the car to avoid it going off midway through the interview) - Chewing gum - Displaying irritating mannerisms or portraying closed off body language - Turning up wearing casual clothes such as jeans and a t-shirt - Not shaking hands firmly  - Talking in length about non-work related topics - Voicing your own opinion on recent matters in the press (your opinion may not be the same as the people you are meeting) - Not having an answer ready as to why you want the job - Not being clued up on the business and what it does To discuss your next career move, get in touch with us today, we have a national presence with plenty of useful market information to share. Karen Chilton | Regional Manager  When did you join Marks Sattin and what is your role within the business? I joined Marks Sattin in July 2013 and was presented with the opportunity to build a new desk looking after the accountancy practices in the Thames Valley region. My role has evolved over the years and I am now the regional manager for our Reading office and I love it! I recruit into a range of different sized accounting firms from the Big 4 to the smaller local independent practices. I also look after in-house tax and audit positions.  What are the highs and lows of your role? Luckily for me there are far more highs than lows! The best part of my job is getting to know the people who I have genuinely helped, for instance candidates that have been presented with career boosting opportunities and my clients who have employed high calibre talent that I helped source. I get on well with all my clients and candidates and I have built long lasting relationships with them over the years. Alongside this I get to work with a great team in a stunning office and have been spoilt with many perks ranging from eating at Michelin star restaurants to spending weekends in Marbella. The lows are the usual you can expect within recruitment – sometimes things don’t go my way but they are far outweighed by the highs!  What is your most memorable placement? All of them are memorable but my favourite placement so far was helping someone get back on track after they had their initial training contract terminated due to exam failure. I helped this candidate get a role in an amazing firm in the Thames Valley where they could continue their ACA studies. Hearing the positive stories of how well they are doing makes my job even more rewarding! Random fact about you? I worked as an air hostess after leaving college and met a range of famous faces, but the most notable was the Dalai Lama!
