FP&A Manager - Fitness & Leisure

My client, a household name in the leisure and fitness industry is looking for an FP&A manager to join their team on a temp to perm basis. The role will be an initial 6 month contract. ACA Qualified and Multi-site experience are a must.

The Role and its purpose:

To lead financial planning processes across the business, and manage consolidation of corporate planning and reporting for the board

  • Take responsibility for the planning, management and delivery of the quarterly re forecast and annual budgeting processes
  • Ownership of the integrated business planning model, ensuring integrity of P&L, Balance Sheet and Cashflow, and implementing improvements over time.
  • Become the cashflow expert of the commercial finance function - both forward and backwards looking
  • Involved in financial analysis and modelling of strategic initiatives including potential M&A opportunities.
  • (Potentially longer term) Provide extensive support to the internal capex committee through development of accurate capex reporting and analysis, working with key stakeholders to ensure robust processes and controls are operating.
  • Take ownership of all investment feasibility models, and deliver continual improvements to these to assist key strategic decision making.
  • Involvement in many ad-hoc business initiatives; providing commercial challenges and analytical support.
  • Improving the commerciality and financial awareness of non-finance teams.
  • Provide support to CFO, FD and Head of Commercial Finance.

The Person

  • Qualified accountant with at least 4-5 yrs PQE (ACA)
  • Strong accountancy understanding across all primary financial statements, particularly cashflow
  • Demonstrable commercial skills, ideally with experience working in an FP&A function or transaction services teams
  • Exceptional proven financial modelling, analytical and presentation skills
  • Excellent Excel and PowerPoint skills
  • Ideally experience of working with multi-dimensional databases (MIS tools)
  • Preferably able to demonstrate experience and/or understanding of multi-site leisure/retail industry
  • Evidence of dealing with senior management and working cross functionally
  • Able to self-motivate and work to strict deadlines
  • Effective prioritisation skills, and able to demonstrate flexibility in working practices
  • Strong people manager able to demonstrate successful development of team members.
  • Have a strong interest in health and fitness

We are based in Enfield and have three factories in the UK and an office in Amsterdam.   September is a particularly busy time for me, as the end of our financial year is in mid-September. As we approach year end, I need to ensure that we are tracking our expected performance especially carefully, so that we can deliver our profit commitment for the year. Thankfully, as we reach year end, everything goes as expected and we deliver another good performance. We are going after a particularly significant profit target this year, but I am pretty confident in our ability to reach this as we’ve developed some great commercial plans and initiatives, and it feels like we have some momentum behind us. In particular, this year will see work commence on a large expansion of one of our factories, and I continue to be heavily involved in the key decisions behind this.   Year-end also means additional reporting to ABF, and a visit from our external auditors (who, like policemen, seem to get younger every year!). My team have ensured that they have prepared the information requested so that the audit can be as efficient and cause as little disruption as possible.   People issues and management also takes up a good deal of my time. As September is the start of our financial year, I’ve had sessions with each of my direct reports to agree their objectives for the year, as well as reviewing their performance for the previous year. I ensure that we talk about their development needs and career plans as this is also very important. Employees in the United Kingdom can be categorised as full-time, part-time, casual, freelance and contract workers, with the self-employed bracket now making up 15% of the entire working population. The number of self-employed workers jumped from 3.3 million in 2001 to 4.8 million in 2017, with a corresponding fall in the unemployment rate showing the overall boost in jobs growth from the rise in self-employment. However, the attractive market for freelancers and contractors has been hit with some uncertainty in recent times, thanks largely to the 2018 Autumn Budget’s announcement of IR35 tax reforms. Here’s what the new IR35 rules could mean for you and your business: What is IR35? IR35 is a piece of legislation originally introduced to the UK in 1999. Its purpose is to differentiate between those workers who operate as genuine contractors and those who work as ‘disguised’ employees to avoid paying tax. It came about to challenge contractors who were taking advantage of the tax efficiencies of working through a limited company, with the aim of defending both the Exchequer from lost taxes and protecting workers’ rights from unscrupulous employees. However, the IR35 has proven to be ambiguous for many, with some contractors taking advantage of loopholes and a lack of clarity. Hence, the new IR35 rules aim to tighten up the contractor market and ensure tax avoidance loopholes are closed. How does IR35 work? There are three principles that can help to determine employment status and whether a contractor falls inside or outside IR35: Control (the degree of control the client has over the work a contractor does and how and when they do it) Substitution (whether the worker needs to do the work themselves or if they could send a substitute in their place) Mutuality of obligation (whether the employer is obliged to offer work and the contractor is obliged to accept it). Additionally, the contract type, provision of equipment and whether a worker is “part and parcel” of a business can all help to determine whether someone falls inside or outside IR35. The change in IR35 rules shifts the responsibility to determine tax status away from the contractor and onto the business that takes them on. Until now, contractors have been able to self-determine their status, however as of April 2020, when the new rules come into effect for the private sector, companies will risk being fined if they don’t make the correct assessment.  How will IR35 impact contract workers? It’s anticipated that many contract workers who have been enjoying the tax benefits of working outside IR35 will fall under the legislation when employers are tasked with determining their status. This will see more contractors having tax and National Insurance contributions deducted from their pay. However, if you operate as a legitimate small business and are determined to work outside of IR35, you will not be affected by the rule changes. How will IR35 impact employers? The major change for businesses is that they will now be responsible for determining the IR35 status of any contractor working for the company. The new rules will only apply to medium and large sized businesses, so contractors who work for small businesses can continue to set their own IR35 statuses. Those businesses that the IR35 rule changes do apply to will face paying back taxes and fines should they be found to be noncompliant. What should I do to prepare for IR35? Contractors may wish to speak to an accountant or personal finance expert to determine whether IR35 will impact them and if a move to permanent work may prove to be more beneficial after the rules come into effect. For many, contracting will remain appealing regardless of increased tax responsibilities, however it’s important to factor in any change in income that IR35 may bring about. Businesses are being warned not to make blanket assessments that cover all their contractors, as this can leave workers without a fair assessment and risk them paying unnecessary taxes without equivalent employment rights. Instead, businesses should consider IR35 status on a case-by-case basis or they may risk losing out on top talent. The HMRC has released a consultation document for businesses to prepare for the IR35 changes, recommending identifying and reviewing current contract workforce status and putting processes in place for taking on new workers. On Wednesday Marks Sattin collaborated with Charlotte Tilbury in Covent Garden to host a networking event for senior finance professionals within the financial services market. The night was a huge success, with emails pouring in from clients complimenting us on our event. The evening was planned around a master class which was hosted by two of Charlotte’s top make-up artists, using one of our clients as a model. They showed all ladies how to create a glam evening look while taking them through the full range of new and existing products on offer. All whist we sipped on prosecco and nibbled delicious treats. After the masterclass the ladies were treated to a personalised mini lesson where they could choose from a lip, eye or skin tutorial using the best products for their skin type. It was great to watch all of our clients get pampered whilst trying out new looks.To end the evening we gave each lady a voucher to redeem on Charlotte Tilbury products, the team took great care of them and walked them around the shop floor to find their preferred products. This event was a great opportunity for us to catch up with some of our hiring managers in a relaxed environment. We learnt about potential new business coming up, current contractor extensions as well as general market information. It was also a great opportunity to network with some future senior finance professionals that we will be working with. We would like to thank everyone that took the time out of their busy schedules to attend, the evening was a huge success and we hope to see you again at another event during the year!
