Commercial Financial Controller

Crewe | £350-£400 per day | Outside IR35 | Initial 3-Month Contract | Immediate Start

An exciting opportunity has arisen for an experienced Commercial Financial Controller to join a growing e-commerce business on an interim basis whilst a permanent appointment is secured.

Reporting directly to the CFO, this is a highly visible role with responsibility for financial performance, reporting, forecasting, controls and commercial decision support across the business. The successful candidate will combine strong financial stewardship with commercial awareness, helping to drive profitability, cash generation and operational performance.

This is not a traditional Financial Controller role.
We're looking for someone who genuinely enjoys understanding the story behind the numbers, identifying trends, risks and opportunities, and providing meaningful insight that influences business decisions. You'll be equally comfortable operating strategically and rolling your sleeves up when required.

The Role

• Lead the finance function and maintain ownership of financial performance and reporting.
• Manage and support the Finance Manager.
• Deliver high-quality management reporting, budgeting, forecasting and cash flow management.
• Provide commercial analysis and actionable insight to support strategic decision-making.
• Drive financial control, accuracy and reporting integrity across the business.
• Partner with senior leaders across finance, operations, marketing and commercial teams.
• Monitor business performance, identifying trends, opportunities and areas for improvement.
• Take ownership of financial oversight for a small overseas subsidiary, liaising with external accountants and advisors.
• Support profitable growth through insightful analysis and informed financial decision-making.

About You

• Qualified accountant (ACA, ACCA, CIMA or equivalent).
• Previous experience as a Financial Controller, Senior Finance Manager, Commercial Finance Manager or similar.
• Strong commercial acumen and the ability to influence senior stakeholders.
• Proven experience within an e-commerce environment.
• E-commerce experience would be highly advantageous, particularly within FMCG, retail, distribution or other product-led environments. Candidates should be comfortable analysing sales performance, margins, inventory, logistics costs and broader commercial drivers to support business decision-making.
• Strong understanding of e-commerce performance drivers, including sales, margins, inventory, logistics, customer acquisition costs and cash flow.
• Strong management reporting, budgeting, forecasting and financial control experience.
• Advanced Excel and financial modelling skills.
• Experience using ERP and reporting systems.
• Hands-on, proactive and comfortable operating in a fast-paced environment.
