The Benefits of Working In a Small Accountancy Firm
The past several years have posed many challenges for small, local firms of accountants. Including finding and retaining staff. Not only is the ever-present skills shortage still an issue but to make matters worse, they have previously found themselves unable to compete with larger firms when it comes to securing quality candidates. They have, until recently, been pipped to the post on deal breakers like salary, flexi-time, home working and extra benefits like bonuses and car allowances. Now, they’re able to offer all of those things and much more. So, what has changed and should you consider working for a small firm of accountants?

Carve Out Your Own Future at Your Own Pace
With a local firm there is more creativity and flexibility when it comes to progression. This might be because there is less competition and more direct contact with the actual owner of the business. So, no hoops to jump through and no time pressure. You can go as far as you want as quickly (or slowly) as you want.
Work/Life Balance
It's no secret, the work/life balance is more present at a smaller firm. Not only are the hours shorter but once you leave work it's rare that you take it home with you. There are always busier periods in accountancy practice, but it's certainly less intense at a local firm. Not only that, but they now offer flexi-time and hybrid working. Some small firms even offer complete, remote working which you'll find elusive in the Top 100
Competitive Remuneration
5 to 10 years ago the wage gap between Big 4 and local firms was vast to say the least. However, more recently that gap has closed quite significantly. Local firms have upped base salaries and overall packages in a bid to increase staff retention and it’s working.
Meaningful, Satisfying Work
At a small firm, clients really matter, not to say that they're not looked after at a large firm, but at a local firm you're entwined in the local community. The work, planning and advice you do genuinely changes their lives and businesses for the better. The impact is significant and can be the difference between failure and growth. Not only that but the workload is extremely varied, meaning you’ll never be bored and your skillset will be stretched.
Working for a small, local firm of accountants isn’t for everyone. Some like the structure and thrive in the rigidity of a large regional or Top 100 practice. However, if you’re creative and passionate about accounting, adding real value and forging your own future then a small firm is for you.
