A leading real estate investor seeks to hire their first in-house tax professional. The role would suit a tax manager from practice or industry with detailed real estate investment and transactional experience.

This investor is at a pivotal point of growth. In the last two years, they have raised over £1bn in fresh capital and are developing a series of exciting, large-scale opportunities.

The Role

The role will be the in-house lead on all taxation matters, including REIT compliance, corporation tax, VAT, CIS, employment taxes and CGS. The role involves both liaising with our outsourced tax advisors and legal teams to ensure new transactions are accounted for in a tax-efficient and compliant manner and ensure their current business complies with all relevant legislation.

The role would suit a tax manager from practice or industry with detailed real estate investment and transactional experience.

The business uses outsourced tax advisors for deal structuring and compliance, and this role will liaise closely with them.

RESPONSIBILITIES

REIT Compliance and Corporation tax

  • Ownership of the relationship with the outsourced tax advisors.
  • Work with external tax advisors to ensure REIT compliance is met.
  • Support tax compliance for significant development pipeline. Ensure payroll matters are tax compliant for circa 175 employees.
  • Implement procedures and controls to ensure any potential breaches are flagged to senior management early with time to rectify before the year end.

VAT

  • Coordinate VAT return work across the REIT and development entities ensuring returns are accurate and timely. Work will be performed by the Operational finance team and outsourced fund accounting team and reviewed by outsourced accountancy function.
  • Be the first point of call for operational VAT queries.
  • Review current processes to identify areas of risk, gaps and incorrect tax treatments.
  • Implement and document processes and controls to aid more accurate and efficient VAT return submissions.
  • Develop and train the operational finance team's understanding of VAT.

Transactions

  • Work with external tax advisers on tax structuring and compliance issues, ensuring a sensible approach to transaction structures and ongoing compliance.
  • Support tax due diligence process, including preparation of information and review of tax impacts of acquisitions or disposals.
  • Ensure appropriate filings are completed on acquisitions and disposals.
  • Responsible for post-deal integration and compliance.

Other responsibilities

  • Ensure Construction Industry Scheme compliance work is complete, accurate and reported timely across development projects.
  • Lead capital allowance process alongside an external advisor.
  • Review of tax disclosures in the Group and subsidiary accounts.

REQUIREMENTS:

  • Qualified at ACA, CTA or equivalent level (e.g. HMRC/international)
  • Strong real estate background
  • Strong technical knowledge

Working Hours:

Core hours, 10am - 4pm. Minimum 3 days per week office based if full time. 40 hours per week full time. Would consider 4 days per week also.
