The Financial Accountant plays a critical role in ensuring a robust financial reporting framework and compliance with all relevant accounting standards. Duties

  • Involvement with and oversight of the smooth-running of the month-end close process, including the posting of specific manual journals.
  • Ensure robust financial controls are established, well understood and being followed across the finance team.
  • Pro-active engagement with external auditors on critical areas and judgements, ensuring treatments are agreed well in advance.
  • Preparation / review of key monthly balance sheet reconciliations.
  • Assisting with the preparation of financial reporting including the submission of monthly management reporting packs and the company's annual statutory accounts.
  • Review of specific transactions (such as fuel purchase contracts and asset purchases) for accounting implications and ensuring these are accurately reflected in financial reporting.
  • Assist in the maintenance of the Fixed Asset Register as required.
  • Support the Financial Controller / Financial Accounting Manager with the co-ordination and execution of business-unit wide projects, relating to changes in accounting standards or changes in the way in which the business operates.

Key skills and experience needed

  • Fully qualified ACA/ACCA accountant in a practice or business environment.
  • Technically astute with a good grasp of both existing and emerging IFRS.
  • Attention to detail and a comprehensive understanding of financial control.
  • Commercial acumen, able to bridge the gap between the accounting implications of certain actions and the commercial objectives.
  • Experience of accounting for financial instruments and derivatives (particularly commodity contracts) would be an advantage.
  • Strong MS Office skills, especially Excel.
  • Keen attention to detail.
  • Ability to meet demanding deadlines and manage multiple ongoing tasks.
  • Confident and self-motivated with a flexible approach to work.
  • Adaptable, capable of working independently and able to lead by example.
