The Financial Accountant plays a critical role in ensuring a robust financial reporting framework and compliance with all relevant accounting standards. The role has responsibility for financial reporting for the Business Unit and for ensuring accounting implications are carefully considered in all commercial, operational and strategic decisions as the business continues its strategy of growth and diversification.
Duties
- Involvement with and oversight of the smooth-running of the month-end close process, including the posting of specific manual journals.
- Ensure robust financial controls are established, well understood and being followed across the finance team.
- Pro-active engagement with external auditors on critical areas and judgements, ensuring treatments are agreed well in advance.
- Preparation / review of key monthly balance sheet reconciliations.
- Assisting with the preparation of financial reporting including the submission of monthly management reporting packs and the company's annual statutory accounts.
- Review of specific transactions (such as fuel purchase contracts and asset purchases) for accounting implications and ensuring these are accurately reflected in financial reporting.
- Assist in the maintenance of the Fixed Asset Register as required.
- Support the Financial Controller / Financial Accounting Manager with the co-ordination and execution of business-unit wide projects, relating to changes in accounting standards or changes in the way in which the business operates.
Key skills and experience needed
- Fully qualified ACA/ACCA accountant in a practice or business environment.
- Technically astute with a good grasp of both existing and emerging IFRS.
- Attention to detail and a comprehensive understanding of financial control.
- Commercial acumen, able to bridge the gap between the accounting implications of certain actions and the commercial objectives.
- Experience of accounting for financial instruments and derivatives (particularly commodity contracts) would be an advantage.
- Strong MS Office skills, especially Excel.
- Keen attention to detail.
- Ability to meet demanding deadlines and manage multiple ongoing tasks.
- Confident and self-motivated with a flexible approach to work.
- Adaptable, capable of working independently and able to lead by example.
