Interim recruitment in the Netherlands update

Elisa Beckschebe our consultant managing the role

It is no longer news that the market changes every so often. It strikes us that we are currently finding freelancers easily for our clients, where our freelancers were initially in a luxurious position.

According to the latest Freelance Market Index (FMI), the expectation is that the number of vacancies for temporary staff will decrease considerably in the coming period. The following results emerged from this research:

  • No growth is expected, but a slight decrease
  • Consumer confidence shows a further decline
  • The preference for the use of freelancers is still related this quarter due to flexibility
  • It is easier to find good freelancers than a quarter ago
  • The number of assignments is decreasing

Trends in interim recruitment in the Netherlands

Looking at the past quarter, compared to the same period last year, there is a decrease in total order volume of 21%. The decrease in this was mainly outside the Randstad area.

Within the financial sector, we saw that the number of professionals grew by 1% last year compared to a year ago. Amsterdam was therefore the front runner, which is not surprising given that most head offices are located in Amsterdam and the surrounding area. Amsterdam is followed by Rotterdam as a popular location for finance firms.

According to statistics from LinkedIn, we are dealing with almost 5,000 interim professionals, from control level, in the Randstad. Of these professionals, more than 20% are financial managers and 20% business controllers, followed by CFO (18%) and Financial Controller (16%).

Facts about contractors and interim workers in the Netherlands

  • 73% of freelancers are found through LinkedIn. Are you struggling to be found for a potential assignment? Check whether your LinkedIn is clearly visible through one of our consultants
  • 61% choose to hire a freelancer because of flexibility
  • Skills count for 60% when considering finding the right freelancer, followed by 35% for CV and experience
  • 77% of the interim financials (from control to C-level) are men, 23% women

Benefits of hiring a freelance financial professional

There are several potential advantages for companies to hire financial professionals on a freelance or contract basis:

  • Cost savings: Freelancers typically work on a project basis and are not entitled to the same benefits as full-time employees, such as healthcare, retirement, and paid time off. As a result, hiring a freelance financial professional can be more cost-effective than hiring a full-time employee.
  • Flexibility: Hiring freelancers allows companies to quickly scale up or down their financial operations based on the needs of the business. For example, a company may need a financial professional to help with a specific project or during a busy season, and then can end the contract once the work is completed.
  • Expertise: Freelance financial professionals often have a broad range of experience and can bring specialized skills and knowledge to a company. This can be particularly useful for small and mid-sized businesses that may not have the resources to hire a full-time financial professional with the same level of expertise.
  • Reduced administrative burden: Companies do not have to worry about managing payroll taxes, benefits, and other administrative tasks associated with hiring full-time employees when working with freelance financial professionals. This can reduce the administrative burden and allow the company to focus on its core business activities.
  • Access to a larger talent pool: Hiring freelance financial professionals gives companies access to a larger pool of talent than they may find in their local area. This can be particularly useful for companies in specialized industries or geographic locations where it may be challenging to find qualified financial professionals.

Overall, hiring financial professionals on a freelance or contract basis can provide companies with greater flexibility, cost savings, and access to specialized expertise. However, it's important to carefully evaluate the qualifications and experience of freelancers before entering into a contract to ensure they can meet the needs of the company.
