Meeting Guido, Senior Consultant in Amsterdam!
Guido Buwalda
After gaining two years of experience in finance recruitment as an Accountancy and Tax specialist at an international recruitment consultancy, I made the switch in 2022 to Marks Sattin to help establish and grow their Amsterdam office.
As Senior Consultant, I guide finance professionals looking for a new job opportunity and help clients find the best person for the job.
Guido, you’ve been with Marks Sattin for over two years now, how are you finding it
It’s been amazing so far! I had a wonderful welcome and feel like I’m part of the MS family. The English culture and humour complement our Dutch culture, and it's been a lot of fun meeting everyone across the offices at the All Company reviews.
Guido, tell us a little bit about your career so far, how did you get into recruitment?
My career in recruitment began when I visited a friend who was working in the industry. He told me about all the exciting things he gets to do with his team and the career possibilities at his firm. Inspired, I told him I wanted to work there too! The following Monday, I went to their office for my first interview, and by Wednesday, I had signed my contract. Now, almost five years later, I’m still in the business, having made nearly 100 placements, billed over 1 million EUR, and helped establish a profitable Marks Sattin office within three years.
You were our second hire for the team in Amsterdam, what made you want to join us at such an early stage in our Dutch journey?
I always want to continue learning new things, and more importantly, I want to develop as much as possible. There is no better environment to learn things in a short period of time than in a start-up environment, but even better is a start-up environment backed up by a well performing firm.
You mentioned that the Marks Sattin Netherlands office feels like a start-up environment – what does that environment offer that other local agencies cannot?
Unlike larger, more traditional agencies, a start-up environment can quickly adapt to market changes and client needs, providing more tailored and responsive services. In our setting, employees have more autonomy and responsibility, promoting a sense of ownership and motivation that fosters an entrepreneurial mindset, driving exceptional performance. Additionally, a start-up environment offers more opportunities for professional growth and advancement, as individuals can take on diverse roles and responsibilities early in their careers.
How would you describe your team and Marks Sattin’s business culture?
Our team is friendly and down-to-earth. We collaborate closely, regularly brainstorming on business development and strategies for the office and the future of the business. We are open about our personal lives and support each other, maintaining an informal and supportive atmosphere.
What is your stand-out achievements or best memories with Marks Sattin so far?
One achievement that stands out is the wildcard I received for the Ibiza trip during one of our All Company review events. It was absolutely unbelievable and an incredibly fun experience! It remains one of my best memories here. When Matt Wilcox announced all the winners, my name and picture suddenly appeared on the screen, and everyone clapped and shouted my name. This moment truly made me feel appreciated for all the work I had done.
What advice would you give to recruitment consultants who are considering joining Marks Sattin in Amsterdam?
If you’re looking for a company that truly cares about its consultants and shows genuine appreciation for their work, values flexibility, work-life balance, transparency, and an open team environment, we might be the perfect fit for you. If you want to approach the business as an entrepreneur and are seeking career opportunities, good commissions, amazing incentives, and incredible company events, don’t hesitate to reach out to us and join the team!
